Hi, I'm Laura McMillan, the owner and operator of Tips 'N' Toes Nails & Aesthetics.

Everyone asks me how I became interested in esthetics. Well, I was out getting my first set of acrylics done one day and thought to myself: "hey, I can do this!". So, when it was time for my first fill, about three weeks later, I returned, had them removed, and had another set put on. Then I knew for sure that this was what I wanted to do.

So, I researched the different schools in various cities, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Kitchener, London, Toronto and St. Catharines. Well, it turned out that the best buy for my buck was at the Cappa School of Professional Hairstyling and Esthetics in St. Catharines, where I knew of their excellent reputation. Attending Cappa was great! The teachers and students were awesome, plus, having relatives in St. Catharines made it easier for me to find suitable accommodations for the initial five week Nail Technician course I attended. While taking that course, I also took the course in waxing and sugaring (hair removal). I of course graduated and received my certificates, came home and started up.

A couple of years later, I needed more, so I returned to Cappa for another five weeks and took more courses: Basic Facials and Skin Care I and II, Hot Stone Massage, Makeup and Eyebrow and Eyelash Tinting. Again, certificates in hand, I returned home and added these to my menu.

The rest is history, as they say!

Our History

Tips 'N' Toes Nails & Esthetics has been operational since February 2003.

Initially, the salon was in my home, in Algoma Mills, operating only as a nail salon. In 2005, I returned to school for esthetic courses.

Working out of home was great: low overhead, the ability to do housework, or other things, when business was slow. But, things weren't moving fast enough for me so I took the plunge and rented this location in Blind River.   I had hoped that business would double by the second year but it didn't happen so I bit the bullet and moved the salon back home in May 2008.

It was great to have the salon back home!  Business was picking up again and I looked forward to serving my loyal customers as well as new ones with a more personal approach.
You may now receive your services in a more private setting than when I was in the downtown salon.  More time is booked between appointments so there's no wait time.

Again, things have changed.  In September 2011, I decided to try Blind River again and here I am, working out of Tammy Roque's Hair Salon and Day Spa.  Let's see what happens next!

I continue to offer a full-service menu and plan on taking more courses so I can offer you even more services in the future.

About me:

I was born in Blind River, Ontario, raised in St. Catharines where I attended the St. Catharines Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. I returned to the North to raise my family in Algoma Mills, in 1977. My wonderful husband, Willy and I were married in May 1981 and we have three adult sons, Laurence (married Brandy July 06), Michael (married Jenny August 07) and Willy (married  Isabel August 09).

I have had many very interesting positions through my adult life: wife and mother, legal secretary, paralegal, office manager, fish market clerk, waitress and room attendant, volunteer firefighter and now, esthtician and nail technician.

And now, my newest important position, that of Grandma! I'm proud to announce the birth of our first grand child, Alexis Grace McMillan, born November 7, 2007.  Congratulations Brandy and Laurence!!! You are great parents!

Our second grand-child, Mikaela Florence, arrived on July 18th, 2008.  Her little brother Lochlyn Joseph arrived on September 26, 2011.  Congratulations Michael and Jenny! You too are wonderful parents!

Isabel and Will's first daughter Élise Monique Cécile arrived on May 28, 2010. We welcomed their second daughter  Mélody Nicole Laura on July 14, 2011!  Another pair of wonderful parents! I'm so blessed!

These little ones are the most beautiful babies I've ever seen, next to my own that is! :)
